Vision and Mission Statement Refinement

Prompt

We have draft vision and mission statements that need improvement.

Current Vision: “[Your current vision statement]”

Current Mission: “[Your current mission statement]”

As a branding expert, refine and rewrite our vision and mission to better reflect our company’s purpose and aspirations. The new statements should be:

  • Clear and Concise: easy to understand and remember.
  • Inspirational: especially the vision, which should describe the impactful future we aim to create.
  • Grounded in Value: the mission should state what we do, for whom, and how it benefits them (highlighting our unique value or approach). It can hint at how we succeed (e.g. through innovation, quality service, etc.), including sustainable growth or value creation if relevant.

Provide the revised Vision and Mission statements. If needed, also give a one-sentence explanation for each, explaining the changes or the core idea, so we can understand your thought process.

How to Use

  1. Insert Current Statements: Plug in your existing vision and mission statements into the prompt where indicated. If you don’t have one or either, you can instead describe your company’s goals and values in that spot, and the AI will craft new statements from scratch. For example, if no current vision exists, you might write: “Current Vision: We currently don’t have a formal vision, but we aim to [describe ultimate goal].”
  1. Provide Context (Optional): If there are particular aspects you want emphasized or problems with the current statements, mention them briefly before running the prompt. For instance, “Our current mission is too vague about our product” or “We want the vision to mention our commitment to sustainability.” This guidance will help the AI target the refinements better.
  1. Run the Prompt: The AI will return a refined vision and mission. Typically, you will get two bold or labeled lines (one for Vision, one for Mission) with the new statements. They should sound sharper and more inspiring. For example, a vision might come out as “To empower small businesses worldwide with innovative analytics tools that drive sustainable growth.” A mission might be “We provide user-friendly analytics software that helps small businesses turn data into insights, enabling smarter decisions and measurable growth.” These are just examples – the actual output will depend on your input context.
  1. Evaluate the Suggestions: Do the new statements capture the essence of your company? A good vision statement is future-oriented and lofty (your “North Star”), while a mission statement is present-oriented and practical (what you do and how you do it). Make sure the tone fits your brand. If the AI included explanations for each, read them to see the reasoning. This can help you decide if the changes make sense.
  1. Refine Further if Needed: You might combine the AI’s suggestion with your own ideas. Feel free to tweak words or add something you feel is missing. If the vision or mission still doesn’t feel right, you can iterate: tell the AI what you liked or didn’t like (“This is closer, but please make the vision shorter and more aspirational,” for example) and run another round.
  1. Finalize and Use: Once satisfied, adopt these refined statements in your strategic documents, website, or team communications. A clear vision and mission help align your team and inform strategic decisions, and now you have improved ones that possibly emphasize your value proposition and long-term goal (which, indirectly, sets the stage for better ROI by focusing everyone on what matters most).
